I've been tast-testing different brands of biscotti at the high and mid-level to see whay Joanne's biscotti is so wonderful.
1. I tried a popular supermarket brand, at least it's the only brand I've ever seen in this large national chain supermarket. It was called Decadence and was dark in color, had an almond piece or two, and dipped in dark chocolate on one side. The best thing about that bite was the dark chocolate the biscotti was dipped in, must be Belgian. The cookie itself was slightly stale, tasteless, and dry.
2. I tried a pastry chef's biscotti at a popular local chain coffee shop where they roast the beans and have a good variety of pastries including scones, Danish, muffins and biscotti. The biscotti was light in color with dark chocolate drizzled across the top. It looked prettier than the supermarket brand and cost five times as much. It tasted bland and dry, but had a nice sweetness, probably from the chocolate drizzle.
3. I tried a fresh-made local brand biscotti sold in Nieman Marcus that cost more than the pastry chef's because the packaging is beautiful, but the label wouldn't stay on and it was a tall box that takes a lot of space. The biscotti was skinny and unadorned compared to the others, and medium brown in color. I took a much anticipated bite, ack! It was awful tasting, what a shock! It was the espresso flavor and did remind me of coffee in the aftertaste, but it was very dry and unpleasant in the mouth.
Joanne's biscotti by contrast, are plump, chewy-crunchy, substantial, flavorful, tasty, and eating one makes me want another, a different variety or the same repeated, I love them all! Joanne can change the world of biscotti eating forever with these delightful treats! How can people live without Joanne's biscotti?
